The original HD

720p — 1280×720 pixels — is where "HD" began, and it remains the most practical quality tier on the internet. A well-encoded 720p film weighs a fraction of its 1080p or 4K versions, streams smoothly at just 2–4 Mbps, and looks remarkably good on phone and tablet screens, where pixel density hides the difference from Full HD almost entirely.

When 720p is the smart choice

• Small screens: on a phone at arm's length, most viewers cannot reliably tell 720p from 1080p — the pixels are simply too small to resolve.
• Slow or metered connections: 720p is the difference between smooth playback and endless buffering on hotel Wi-Fi, mobile data and congested networks — and it's the kindest tier to a data cap.
• Storage: the smallest file size per film means more movies per gigabyte than any other HD tier.

One honest caveat

On large TVs at couch distance, 720p visibly softens — that's where 1080p and 4K earn their extra bits. The right way to think about quality tiers is fit-for-screen: 720p for mobile and light connections, 1080p as the universal standard, 4K for big panels.
