How movie 3D works

Stereoscopic 3D shows each eye a slightly different image — via polarized glasses (RealD), alternating shutter glasses, or laser-filtered wavelengths (Dolby 3D) — and your brain fuses them into depth. Done well, with films composed for depth rather than converted as an afterthought, the effect can be genuinely immersive.

The rise, fall and afterlife of 3D

After Avatar (2009) rewrote box-office history, studios rushed 3D conversions of everything — many of them dim, cross-eyed cash grabs that soured audiences. TV makers dropped 3D support entirely around 2017, which is why no streaming service offers 3D today and 3D Blu-rays are a collector's niche. But theatrical 3D never fully died: premium formats like IMAX 3D and Dolby Cinema still screen major releases, and Avatar's sequels proved audiences will still show up when the 3D is native and purposeful.

• 3D Blu-ray: requires a 3D-capable TV/projector and player; discs are increasingly collector's items.
