The resolution movies skipped

1440p — marketed as QHD or (loosely) 2K — is 2560×1440 pixels: nearly double Full HD's pixel count, still well short of 4K. Here's the honest part most sites won't tell you: almost no film is distributed in 1440p. Streaming services and discs jump straight from 1080p to 2160p. Confusingly, in professional cinema "2K" actually means 2048×1080 — barely more than Full HD — and a large share of Hollywood films are still finished on 2K digital intermediates even when shown on "4K" screens.

So why does QHD matter?

Because of monitors. 1440p is the sweet spot of the PC and gaming world — sharper than 1080p, far less demanding than 4K — so millions of people watch movies on QHD displays every day. A 1080p stream upscales cleanly on them, and a 4K stream downscales with a visible sharpness bonus (supersampling), which makes a QHD monitor a genuinely great movie screen even though nothing is mastered for it.

Watching tips for QHD screens

• Pick the 4K stream if your plan and bandwidth allow — downscaled 4K on a 1440p panel looks noticeably crisper than a native 1080p stream.
• Sit close: at desk distance, resolution differences are far more visible than on a living-room TV.
• Don't chase "1440p rips" — they're just re-encodes of 1080p or 4K sources, never a native format.
